Alexander Neilson Hunter (1867-1921)

Hunter was proprietor of seed and nursery firm Austin & McAslan, which was reputedly Glasgow's oldest business having started trading in 1717.
Founder John McAslan rented land on Hutcheson Street from Hutcheson's Hospital for use as a nursery. They subsequently moved to the site of Tramway. Alexander Neilson Hunter became a partner in the firm in 1892 and continued to develop the business with his son-in-law James McMichael and long serving employee John Cairns eventually joining him as partners when his health began to fail. He was a member of the Council of the Horticultural Trade Association and a member of the Seed Advisory Committee to the Department of Agriculture.
He died on 24th December 1921 at Guiltreehill and is buried in Cathcart Cemetery.
