Andrew Black

Architect Andrew Black partner of Miller & Black, 58 Renfield Street, was born in Motherwell to David Black, joiner and his wife Catherine Turpie.
He started his apprenticeship in 1877 with John Hutchison (1841-1908) and remained with him until 1892 during which time he became chief assistant and was chiefly responsible for the design of Wylie Hill & Co., department store, 20 Buchanan Street.
Andrew Black was a talented draughtsman and is assured of his place in history for being the influential teacher of Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868-1928).
On leaving John Hutchison he set up his own practice in Galashiels where he remained until going into partnership with fellow architect Robert Miller (1867-1950) in 1899. Both architects were admitted to F.R.I.B.A. on 11th June 1901.
Some of the buildings he is known for are the Scottish Border Records Offices, Galashiels, Selkirk (1896), Shawlands United Free Church (1900), Hamilton Baptist Church and Halls (1909), Harper Memorial Baptist Church (1922) which was named in honour of Rev John Harper, a Baptist minister who lost his life onboard the SS Titanic on 14th April 1912. Andrew Black died on 20th December 1927.
