Exploring the Past: Highlights from Our Recent Talks

Pollokshields Heritage has been joined by some wonderful speakers who have enlightened audiences with tales of Glasgow’s booming past industries. At different points in time, the city was once home to many picture houses and pottery factories.

First up, in November Gary Painter presented to us a whirlwind tour of cinematic history in Scotland with a particular focus on some popular Southside venues. The evening was accompanied by our aptly chosen refreshment for the evening - popcorn.

We explored the designs and interiors of some of the buildings inspired by Turkey and Egypt, learnt about screens hidden behind tenement housing, and how the multiplex triggered a revival that sees the whole story coming full circle. Picture houses were truly a hub for local communities.

Ruth Impey

Co-Director of Make It Glasgow community interest company and founder of the Scottish Pottery Museum

At the start of the year, Ruth Impey brightened up a cold, dark January with a talk on Glasgow’s colourful pottery past. We learnt about 8 major industrial ceramics manufacturers based across Glasgow that shipped the the farthest corners of the world including North America, China and Malaysia.

We were not only treated to a close up viewing of a 165 year old dish that had been unearthed from a wreckage outside the bay of Lamlash, but also a special plate created by Make It Glasgow for the city’s 850th anniversary.
